The eco-friendly campus offers hostel and transport facilities, experienced faculty, and advanced learning spaces, ensuring a student-centric experience throughout.

The University of Kashmir launched its first engineering program in 2009 with a B.Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering at the main campus. Encouraged by its success, the Institute of Technology was established at the Zakura Campus in 2014. Since then, it has grown into a leading engineering institute in Jammu & Kashmir. The University has produced over 1,500 undergraduate and 400 postgraduate engineers.

Currently, the Institute offers B.Tech. programs in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Computer Science & Engineering, with specializations in Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity. Students can also pursue minors in high-demand areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Robotics, Electric Vehicles, and more. The Institute also offers a B.Voc. programme in Automotive Technology and a Four-Year Undergraduate Programme through the "Design Your Degree" mode, allowing students to create customized interdisciplinary learning paths.

M.Tech. programmes in Design Engineering, Power Systems and Control, and Electronics and Communication Engineering are available. Ph.D. programs are offered in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry.

The curriculum at the Institute is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Credit Framework. It promotes flexible, interdisciplinary learning and emphasizes real-world problem-solving, ethical values, and sustainable engineering practices. Students can also earn industry-relevant minor degrees to enhance their skills and employability.

Each department is equipped with modern labs and equipment to support hands-on and experiential learning. The Electronics and Communication Engineering department features advanced FPGA and DSP boards, optical fibre trainers, PCB machines, high-end electronic workstations, IoT Modules, Antenna Testing Systems, Bio-Medical Instrumentation Setups and Embedded Systems Labs.

Electrical Engineering Labs offer Relay Testing Systems, Machine Suites, Transformer Oil Testing Kits, Adaptive Control Systems, Real-Time Scada based Power System Monitoring, Thyristor-controlled Setups, and Computing Platforms for Power Systems Simulations. Dedicated Electric Vehicle labs allow students to explore battery management, motor controllers, and power electronics.

In Civil Engineering, students use Total Stations, Digital Theodolites, GPS Setups, Tri-Action Machines, Direct Share Test Machines, CBR Test Machines, and Concrete, Soil, and Water Test Setups.

Mechanical Engineering labs include CNC Machines, IC Engine Test Rigs, UTM, Variable Assisted Resin Injection Moulding Machine, Schlieren Setup, High-End Metallurgical Microscope, Hydraulic Turbine Machines, Universal Vibration Apparatus and High-Temperature Wear Testing Equipment.

Computer Science and interdisciplinary labs focus on cutting-edge areas like Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Robotics, featuring GPU-powered systems, High-End Workstations, Cybersecurity Sandboxes, Robotic Kits and Simulators. These labs provide hands-on experience that complements classroom learning and prepares students for real-world challenges.

The engineering workshops further enhance technical training. Facilities include machine shops with lathes, milling, shaper, and drilling equipment; automotive diagnostic labs with lifts and testing systems; arc, TIG, and spot welding stations; and smithy, sheet metal, and carpentry workshops. These environments bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical skills.

The campus also houses a 5G Use Case Lab in collaboration with Department of Telecommunication, an e-Yantra Robotics Lab (in collaboration with IIT Bombay), and the Engineering Kitchen.

The library at Institute complements the Allama Iqbal Library on the main campus, offering over 20,000 books, technical journals, project reports, and digital resources. Quiet study areas support focused research and academic work.

The Institute maintains strong academic partnerships with institutions like IIT Roorkee, NIT Srinagar, AMU, and IISc Bangalore. Industry collaborations include Tata Advanced Systems, NHPC, PowerGrid, BSNL, the Jal Shakti Department, and JKSPDC. The Institute is a Nodal Center for Virtual Labs of IIT Kanpur offering trainings to students remotely on labs in major IITS and other reputed institutes of India.

These partnerships provide research, internships, and curriculum development opportunities aligned with industry needs.

Industry exposure is a key part of the academic experience. Students regularly intern at hydroelectric plants, telecom facilities, and automotive centers. They also benefit from industry-recognized certifications, professional mentorship, and hands-on training that bridges academics and careers.

Major recruiters include Tata Advanced Systems Ltd, Bharat Electronics Lts, Vedanta, Indus Towers, and Hindustan Zinc Ltd. Many IoT alums have gone on to pursue higher studies and research at leading institutions such as New York University, the University of Nevada, University of Huddersfield, Budapest University of Technology, Bauhaus University, King Fahd University, Deakin University, IITs, IISc, BARC, and others.

The 4-Star Rated Centre for Innovation, Incubation & Entrepreneurship at the Institute plays a pivotal role in fostering student entrepreneurship. Along with NIF-JK Cell, CIIE has helped file 97 patents (56 granted) and 61 grassroots patents, and has scouted over 11,000 grassroots innovations. Through programs like INSPIRE–MANAK, it supported over 1,700 student innovators between 2022 and 2024. CIIE supports students with proposal & patent application writing, mentoring, funding, and connections to national platforms such as Startup India, and TIDE. CIIE promotes innovation and entrepreneurship through awareness programs, outreach initiatives, exhibitions, and AICTE-sponsored FDPs, with hundreds of events held across schools and colleges. As an Institutional Innovation Council under AICTE and the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell, CIIE also conducts activities as per the AICTE innovation calendar.
